Megacon Moments: Allen Bellman

This, for me, was a real magical megacon moment.

Stevie.

Legend is a term used much too liberally these days, but in the comic book industry Allen Bellman is a legend. He worked for timely comics which would eventually become Marvel, on titles such as The Human Torch, All Winners Comics and Sub Mariner Comics.

He was drawing these characters 20 years before Stan lee reimagined them in the Silver age of comics.

Now approaching 90 years old, Allen was charming, warm, witty and displayed more enthusiasm and passion for comic books than most of all his younger, overpaid peers. We spoke at length about times 30 years before i was born, yet I was transfixed by his knowledge and memory of that seminal era. This man not only lived through the birth of superhero comics, he helped make it happen.

Allen, you are a true Golden age great.

It was an honour and a privilage to spend time with you, and you won’t see me write that very often.
