Over “snikt” really? Wolverine doesn’t say that, he says “come at me, bub”

Comment on Retro Review – Superman 1978 by Andy M http://www.worldofsuperheroes.com/2014/07/retro-review-superman-1978/#comment-863 Thu, 21 Aug 2014 18:09:47 +0000 http://www.worldofsuperheroes.com/?p=53004#comment-863 Ah, the time-travel deus-ex-machina – a much loved cop out for any script :)

Robot Chicken have parodied Superman’s more ‘curious’ powers a few times (one clip can be seen at http://youtu.be/aPB4-EW2Fck ).

You hit the nail on the head by saying Donner didn’t make the mistake of grounding the character in reality. The recent Man of Steel film had the character try to fly by jumping, then jumping a bit more, then struggling to beat gravity and jump further, until gravity just gave up on the whole thing and let him fly. By showing the struggle it made it seem more unbelievable that he ever flew. Whereas Donner just had him rip open his shirt, show a ‘S’ logo, and away he went. We didn’t need a reason as to how he could do it, we simply accepted it.

A brilliant film, and one which stand the test of time (if not the test of time travel).

Comment on Retro Review – Superman 1978 by Steve http://www.worldofsuperheroes.com/2014/07/retro-review-superman-1978/#comment-861 Thu, 21 Aug 2014 10:44:48 +0000 http://www.worldofsuperheroes.com/?p=53004#comment-861 You know how much I love Superman and especially this film, it’s one of the reasons I founded this site. Despite the wonderful CGI films released over the last few years, it is still, with the possible exception ot Tim Burtons Batman, the best Superhero film ever.
Donner never fell into the trap, as so many directors do now, of grounding the character in reality. Superman is a figure with the powers of a god. By all the laws of physics he could never exist. You can ground James Bond in reality or Indianna Jones or even Batman but not Superman. Superman is fantasy not science fiction and Donner realised that. It is a whimsical film, maybe a little tongue in cheek but it has one essential quality, heart.
The only problem I have with the film is my pet hate, time travel. If Superman can go back in time, presumably by travelling faster than the speed of light to solve a problem, would he ever need to do anything in real time. He’d simply wait till disater strikes, then go back in time and prevent it happening. Anyway don’t get me started on the whole time paradox thing. It makes my head hurt.

Comment on Madness and Virtue: The Psychology of Batman Versus Superman by Steve http://www.worldofsuperheroes.com/2014/08/madness-virtue-psychology-batman-versus-superman/#comment-860 Tue, 19 Aug 2014 08:12:47 +0000 http://www.worldofsuperheroes.com/?p=54360#comment-860 Hi Trevor. Cracking article. The reason these two heroes endure is because they represent the ends of the superhero spectrum, not just in terms of power but in terms of method and even ideology. All other superheroes fall somewhere in between. They are the benchmark by which all the others are judged.
The one issue I would take up with you is if, heaven forbid, you did find yourself hanging from a helicopter rope ladder with Jaws hanging off your leg, you might not think a can of shark repellent too frivolous!

Not a less conspicuous creature like, say, a dog or cat. Nope, a panther. Also, how come he always had clothes when he changed back?

I watched a couple of the TV movies of Man From Atlantis a few years back. Loved them as much as I did as a wee nipper. Yes, it looks dated, and is somewhat cheesy at time, but it still entertained. Much like Space 1999 still does (not Gerry Anderson’s best moment, but at least for the first season it was okay)
