The Simon & Kirby Library: Science Fiction Novel Review

As a grizzled and hardened old critic, its a while since I got misty eyed over a book but Titan Books sent me one last week that did cause me to become a bit girly.

This proves that a book can be seriously impressive, historically significant and great fun at the same time.

From the awesome wraparound cover (which you should remove to see the hardback underneath) through every single classic, colourful page, it demonstrates almost on a sub conscious level why we are drawn to the comic book medium.

As a committed agnostic I don’t know what a religious experience feels like but i imagine holding, reading and absorbing this to me is as close as I’m going to get.

You don;t have to make allowances for how old the subject matter is; it is still as vibrant, entertaining and relevant now as it was over half a century ago.
Simon and Kirby were, perhaps more than any other, true pioneers, innovators and master story teller.

Sci Fi Wire described them as “The Lennon and McCartney of golden age comic books.” This does them a disservice. It would be more appropriate to describe Lennon and McCartney as the Simon and Kirby of silver age music.

To our friends at Titan: Please send me a boring book to bring me down to earth.
