Super Boy

Scott Lobdell:  Story

RB Silva:  Pencils

Super Boy starts with the clone of Superman and some other person in the tank. Red who is a doctor with no other name is trying to explain that the tests that are being run on the clone aren’t working because they may not be the right tests. The clone agrees, and wonders how he knows what he does, the fact that he can hear them, and feel them, and his brain is his entire body is lost on the government agency known as Project N.O.W.H.E.R.E.. So what do you do when everything you try doesn’t work? Try something else right? Nope in this DC book they decide to terminate the subject. Not their best idea. The clone aided by a mental projection from Red goes ballistic killing everything in the room, just before Red can hear who donated the other DNA for the test.

There is some intrigue going on here. A character known as Templar aka Zaniel shows up at the facility to take Super Boy away. A hard charging reporter from the Daily Planet has a mole on the inside trying to find out what the project is. Red along with the brain trust is trying to find out why Super Boy would walk away from a woman in a burning building. Oh in case I missed it, the cliff hanger has a bunch of other metahumans in it tied to Templar.

Great first issue, easily my favorite of the new 52. There is suspense intrigue, mystery, a list of characters that we don’t know, and those that we do are on the outskirts of the story. The art is fantastic, from the high tech Super Boy/ clone room, to Middle America attention to detail is spot on and the accompanying colors fit each panel like a glove. Like all the new 52 a back story is told, but the pacing in this book was superb, we know what there is to know without shoving it down the reader’s throat.

I had no problems with this issue; I enjoyed the story lines, the art and colors. The characters were easily accessible, and this is a great book to start with. My expectations were high for this book; if for no other reason than it would be part of the Supes family books, and I am pleased to say it will be part of my families reading also.

  • This is a phenomenal book. My favorite thus far of the new 52. It is what a #1 should be and he is finally more interesting than Superman

  • Yeah, DAMM I totally agree! The styling of this book won me over even before I started to read. The panels were excellent, the art, colors, all of it blended to the story. Absolute best book so far with Captain Atom a very close second.
