Does Marvel Have a Villain Problem?
March 3, 2017 By Jon Somers
Marvel has been criticised, more than once, for having a villain problem. We all know what we are talking about, the villain is just a bit mehhh in a quite a few of the films. For example, can you remember the names of the villains in Iron Man 2, Ant Man, The Incredible Hulk? It Is a problem that Studio president Kevin Feige understands and even agrees with the logic. He just doesn’t quite see it as a problem. He said in a recent interview,
“It always starts with what serves the story the most and what serves the hero the most. A big criticism of ours is that we focus on the heroes more than the villains, I think that’s probably true.”
He went on to say that people with regards to Marvel people remember the Superhero as that is who they concentrate on. I don’t think many would say that Marvel has a superhero problem, infact many would say their superheroes are by far the best.
He used batman, The Dark Knight as an example. When people talk about that film it is all about the Joker and Heath Ledgers portrayal of him. This is because the film focussed on the villain, what people don’t talk about is Christian Bales Batman, not because it was bad or poorly acted just because the Joker was the main entity in that film. With Marvel it is all about the Iron Man, Ant Man, The Hulk, The Guardians of the Galaxy, the superheroes.
