Superhero Pride! How to Show Your Love of Your Favorite Superheroes
March 7, 2016
Superheroes are an intrinsic part of popular culture. “The Avengers,” “Batman,” “Superman” and the slew of “X-Men” movies have moved superheroes from the pages of your favorite comics to the silver screen. Even Harry Potter is something of a superhero — though perhaps a less conventional one.
If you’re a true fan, you go above and beyond to support your favorite superheroes. But what more can you do now that your bedroom is covered with posters? Here are some ideas on how you can show your support in new and exciting ways.
Comic-Con, Sakura-Con and Fanboy Expo are just a couple of the conventions that feature comic book, anime and movie superheroes. Chances are at least one of these conventions is happening in your area sometime this year.
When you attend conventions, you show your pride for your favorite characters and you support the artists, writers and actors who pour their hearts and souls into the production of your favorite shows, characters and comic books. Get inside scoops, meet like-minded people and form a community that shares your love of superheros and pop culture.
You’ll need transportation to and from the convention as well as a handy way to get around the convention itself. If you drive yourself, decorate your car with custom vinyl decals to match your costume. Many custom vinyl retailers are online and take orders for full car designs. If full decals are a bit much for your budget or liking, simple bumper stickers show off your support in a more subtle way.
Once you’re at the convention, get around on a bike or skateboard. Many comic book superheroes are featured on skateboard decks, and you can paper your bike with stickers of your favorite characters.
Each superhero costume has its own quirks and hurdles when you plan to make it yourself, but there are some materials that are handy for a multitude of costumes. Goggles, arm and knee pads, toy guns and mountain bike body armor can all be painted and altered for specific costumes. Leather jackets, trench coats and unique hats may also come in handy when you start your costume brainstorm.
Don’t be afraid to steal ideas from other convention goers. The best superhero costumes are always found at the international Comic-Con in San Diego, so take a look at this collection of stunning costumes for inspiration.
Everyday Life and Parties
Don’t save your superhero pride for conventions alone. Take your fandom a step further with superhero paraphernalia, such as T-shirts, watches and smartphone covers. Many online shops carry niche superhero shirts and accessories.
Show off these everyday items by hosting superhero parties and marathons of your favorite shows. Involve friends to split the cost and to get more ideas. Make some superhero-themed drinks, such as the Captain America Shot and the Incredible Hulk cocktail. The latter combines two parts absinthe, one part melon liqueur and three parts Mountain Dew. This tastes great and gives off an iridescent, almost radioactive green.
