REVIEWS: The Batman vs Superman Trailers
March 26, 2016 By Brett Jett
As you’ve probably guessed from my work on translating William Marston’s concepts to the public, I have a certain ability to get inside people’s minds, especially other writers. Let’s see if I can surmise the inner story of the DAWN OF JUSTICE movie.
So I’m told that its about uniting the DC Trinity for the first time, and eventually the JLA. But after seeing this trailer, I can clearly see that its about far more deeper issues. The writers have evidently done their research on all of these superheroes’ original concepts & themes.
This movie is about people’s reactions to these superheroes. So long have we taken for granted that superheroes go around unchecked, being viewed as the incorruptible goodguys. But I feel DC has changed its format to keep things interesting and compete with Marvel. I sense the premise these day is: What if superheroes really existed in our world?…How would society really react to them? Ah! And that would bring up a load of unexplored issues with DC superheroes. To me, I’ve always held that if they did exist in our world, they’d be operating more like Angel (Buffy’s beau), in a world that they’re at odds with.
I see that the people in the story see Superman as a false god, yet others see him as the messianic new hope. The writers have brought Superman’s most basic themes back to the forefront! That of the Nietzschean overman, and the questions it raises about absolute power corrupting absolutely. Our version of superman is one who serves rather than dictates…however that’s not to say that he couldn’t go the other way, given the right emotional stimulus.
Which very very curiously connects to original themes inherent in Wonder Woman! Yes…if you don’t know what they are, peruse through my FREE online manuscript, “Who Is WW?”. Without his morality, Superman would be a dictator….without hers, WW would be a wild savage. In her world, its about keeping one’s own power in check being the key to peace & happiness….that everyone needs to submit to a loving authority rather than a destructive one like their own Egos. Dominance and submission.
Which leads straight into the other theme of “the rage that turns good men cruel….Its also a theme inherent of WW. This time its applied to Batman…a character that would realistically succumb to his destructive Ego (as would Green Lantern). Its also a theme that’s been prevalent in the real world. I just think of all the nations and groups (or YOU the individual!) out there who once were oppressed, but are now the oppressors. And that’s what naturally happens when you don’t keep yourself in check through wisdom and loving submission.
Which makes the decision to cast Gal Gadot VEEERY interesting! She’s from Israel, a nation known for formerly oppressed folks whose government now is basically oppressing Palestinians, many would say. I gotta wonder: Does Gadot feel the moral responsibility to improve herself to be a model of peace & reconciliation, since she is now cast in the shadow of the Wonder Woman? Or will she remain ever bias to her country alone with utter disregard for the other group? Oooooooooooo!
Oh, I’ve already seen the new WW outfit. I have a lot to say about the design and its symbolic connection to the original Marstonian concepts. But more on that later.
Overall, I’d say this Snyder-made movie is taking these characters down to their original basics. Underneath the superhero veneer & silly costumes, who are they? Superman is basically an alien… Batman is basically a wealthy vigilante… WW is a superstrong amazon warrior. Which is why this movie deals with the implication of the existence of aliens, amazons, and other beings whom we as Earth humans have thought to be just myth. Not only does the world learn that its not alone in the universe, but that the myths that they studied as children are in fact REAL…with real life meanings…and that they tell us something about not only those magical beings, but about ourselves and the Collective Unconscious.
I heard that “BvS” (as fans have dubbed this movie’s title) will be released March 25…..How interesting, since that was also the last day of my weeklong sojourn into Mainstream internet land back in 2012 when I first released the FREE “Who Is WW?” manuscript.
Ah! So Holly Hunter plays Senator Finch! I thought her voice sounded familiar! So its very ironic that the actress who played Elasti-Girl, a super who had to live in anonymity in THE INCREDIBLES movie, is now playing the other side—a government official who is suspicious of a super!
This trailer explores more on the topic of society’s (& Batman’s) reaction to a superpowered being as a threat rather than a superhero.
I reckon that the point of the movie is to show how these superpowered beings keep themselves in check, thus finally winning the public’s trust and becoming the JLA. And that its WW who will introduce the idea to the guys fighting, after breaking it up….thus fulfilling one purpose for which William Marston created her to do. She tells them that its her bracelets that help keep her power in check. Superman proceeds to give WW a chunk of Kryptonite as his own power check. But she declines, as she doesn’t need it to defeat him. So he hands it to Batman. And what keeps Batman in check is Alfred. It all works out fine!
And the soundtrack of this movie! I love it! Its a very heavenly choir type sound with deep emotions. Sounds like a John Debney production…a composer who I’ve recommended for WW’s theme score.
But hey, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor!? I never saw him in that role. But then I thought about it: Zack Snyder is likely going for a more realistic, 3-dimensional creepy, disgustingly deceptive Lex, which is very true to the character, indeed. I can feel his slimy evil even from the trailer! I’ve known a lot of “Lex Luthors” in my real life.
Which is why its so exciting that WW is involved, becuz its likely that the story is Lex manipulates Batman into fighting Superman, before WW steps in to stop them (by first saving Batman’s azs), then immediately exposes the truth about Lex Luthor via Magic Lasso & all, thus embarrassingly defeating him in record time! This is a scene that I’ve waited years to see! LOL
Tell me you Wonder fans aren’t dying to see that as well! I actually talk a bit about this eventuality in my “Who Is WW?” manuscript.
So far, WW is looking good in this movie. They haven’t shown us what her speech sounds like, but that look in her face while in combat shows a certain warrior calm & confidence…very true to the original WW personality! And yet she is alluring and unassuming while in her red, blue, or white dresses….The colors of France’s flag…artist Harry Peter’s maternal heritage. Its just as I wrote about WW’s beauty…an intuitively perceived beauty where she can be the most attractive lady even walking through a crowd of celebs & supermodels. She might be operating as a spy to find out what’s going on between Superman & Batman. With her wisdom of dominance/submission, she may very well be the moral center, the anchor among not only the Trinity, but the whole JLA…as she should be, considering her original concepts & themes.
Which is why its symbolically appropriate that there’s—among other outfit contours—a “V” on her belt. Indeed, she is the “V” in the movie title “BvS”. Heck, with all that carnivorous testosterone between two alpha men going at it, is very much the “V-8” that balances things out! (Note: She’s deeply associated with the number 8.) While Superman, being the gender flip of WW, has an upside down “V” shape on his frowning forehead! LOL
But more on her outfit design later…as there’s something fundamental about it that most fans are missing. BTW, while in civvies, where’s her bracelets? Is that a bulletproof ring she’s wearing?
Hey guys! In March, not only is WW finally making an exciting appearance, but you should also check out Tris of the movie ALLEGIANT, who is another female champion who was molded from the same Heroine’ Journey blueprint that WW started.
So! Its Doomsday who is the major threat that I’ve heard about in this movie! Guys, how cool is that?!
And the entrance that WW made! Snyder is obviously playing on the original WW custom of her making sudden appearances out of nowhere! While its true that it would be appropriate for a Wonder Woman to step in and quell the conflict between two men, it is more refreshing that the Trinity will now be fighting, as a team, the proper threat to humanity. Despite Batman looking & moving like he belongs in “SIN CITY”, the DC Trinity look so bad-azs standing together!!! Very reminiscent of the first time they were shown together in the newspaper strips.
But you know what? WW wouldn’t need Superman or Batman to defeat Doomsday. Doomy is of Kryptonian science, while she’s magic. And magic can defeat Kryptonians. Plus she’s a fierce warrior! I can see her stabbing Doomsday eyes out, taking out his heat vision ability. Or taking off her bracelets, then opening up a can of whoop-azs on Doomy! Heck, she would be the one to give Doomsday a doomsday!
This would explain why during the “Death Of Superman” story arc that, of all the superheroes who fought Doomsday and lost, WW was the one hero who was not shown having a go at him. I’ve always thought that was a curious omission. But now we ought know that she plausibly would’ve killed him a lot quicker than Superman did, which means less long drawn-out drama, thus low comics sales.
But its vital that you WW fans know that WW was designed in the shadow of the Savior archetype. Which makes her slaying of Doomy more symbolically appropriate, as the Savior was prophecized to defeat the Beast…just as the main heroine in “Pride & Prejudice & Zombies” slayed the Antichrist who was threatening her boyfriend. Be on the look out for my next article on this curious topic, WW vs the Antichrist 666!
Bottomline, I just hope in this movie, they make WW the true hero/ savior of the JLA…not Batman!
And yes, more slimy Jesse-Lex. He says power can be an incentive. While WW (and I) know that it can corrupt without submission checks. And the artwork on the wall behind Clark amidst him chatting with Bruce on differing ideologies….that piece expresses the truth of “the ex-oppressed often becoming the oppressor”. Thus confirming my assertions about this movie’s central theme.
I give this trailer three stars!
I just heard that WW’s solo movie will come out June 23!! Hey, that’s the date that I’ve placed WW’s in-story birth at! How appropriate that DC/Warner pick that particular date for the debut of my favorite superheroine archetype!
Well, we finally get to hear WW’s speech patterns! DC/Warner was saving it as a surprise for us all, since its well known that fans have been disputing about what Diana should sound like, being raised in another country and all. And it turns out she has an English accent, which likely means Snyder is mostly using elements from the New52 where she resides in England…the motherland of William Marston’s ancestors where the Suffrage Movement was most fiercely fought.
I’m glad to see that this Batman is extra BRUTAL. Becuz it helps accent the point of WW not having a movie all these years, in place of all these testosterone-overloaded flicks, such as Punisher, Batman, Deadpool, etc, AKA bloodcurdling masculinity…..She comes as a fresh glass of water! She is the balance remedy to all that “revenge” mentality that was started by Batman and is mentally unhealthy for kids & adult audiences.
Its cool that Snyder places WW and Batman as possible love interests. Which in my psych analysis is more likely than her and Superman. With her and Batman’s polar opposite dispositions creating attraction, in addition to their common goals of justice, its an inevitable match. They’re both warriors who are still big kids inside who never really grew up. Plus, her feminine ways complements (& stabilizes) his bloodcurdling masculine appetite. I maintain my analysis that WW would admire Batman’s outfit as being a creative, unique variation of the many masked battle armors that she has seen in throughout human history. She too is creative & quirky.
But my FAVORITE scene in this trailer appeared exactly one minute and 41 seconds (there’s that magic WW number again!) into the trailer. When WW leapt forward to attack Doomsday, and gave a battle cry that just sent shivers up my spine & pumps me with adrenalin!
Go get’em Wonder Woman!! Woo hoo!!!
I predict all you WW fans will cheer loudly the moment WW makes her entrance in the movie…which I’m guess will be about 41 minutes into the movie! LOL
Do any of you WW fans like the new WW outfit that Gal wears? Either way, I will reveal an interesting quirk about the design of this new outfit, as well as related to the New 52 outfit. But that will have to wait for another article on Iconography. Because the BvS movie is close upon us! But for now, just know that (whether the costume designer intended it or not) the slanted striations on Wonder Gal’s outfit very much symbolize her original concept of diametrics….Yin/Yang, Feminine/Masculine, Love/War, submission/dominance, etc. Also, Dr. Marston’s initials are located in the contours of her belt! (Very much like on the chestplate of my own WW incarnation’s outfit.) Look for it!
Now if you learn nothing else from the movie, learn that Lex Luthor (or Zack Snyder?) is wrong….Devils don’t come from the sky or beneath us…they come from within all of us. The question is, will you let that Devil come out, or will you put it in check?
Well that was all 4 of my Trailer Reviews condensed into one. Hope you found them useful, and enjoy the movie! And of course, I will review this movie afterwards! Then compare my review of these Trailers with my review of the actual movie.
Hey, before you fans finally go see the BvS, I have one last send-off for you regarding a scene from the animated JL show that symbolizes what had happened to WW in the last few decades……
Superman: “When will you be back?”
[She stops, looks over her shoulder…]
Wonder Woman: “I don’t know.”
[Then with a crackle of thunder, she flies off, disappearing into the rainy sky.]
Well, guys…….she’s back nowwwwwww!
