Elementis: The Awesome Foursome – Chapter Fourteen “Frenzy!”
March 11, 2016 By Holly Clarkson
Chapter Fourteen. Frenzy!
There was a lot going on in the world.
What had started out as a civil war in the Middle East had now escalated to involve all the global super powers. The mass migration of refugees fleeing that conflict threatened to engulf the European States, already reeling from recent terrorist attacks.
The Ebola crisis had abated but still cast a dark shadow over the African continent. Extreme weather continued to wreak havoc across the globe; forest fires in North America and Australia, and flash flooding and landslides on almost every continent.
But today there was now only one news story. On every channel, in every newspaper, on every podcast, website and social media outlet.
As the images of the extraordinary events in California and the Antarctic were beamed around the world, websites crashed, telephone systems were overwhelmed and social media outlets went into meltdown.
Initially there was speculation about it being a hoax or leaked footage from a new movie but when the authenticity of the footage was verified; it was, as Green had predicted, the most sensational news story ever. For three days, it was almost the only thing that anyone on earth talked about. Were they aliens, mutants? Was it a government experiment?
The debate raged and Green knew it was time to start to quell the flames. He dispatched the four to Tanzania with specific instructions.
Within hours those instructions had been carried out. Just after midday the four arrived on the outskirts of Dodoma. With them, in shackles forged from stone, were almost a hundred members of the regions most notorious ivory poaching gangs and a pile of thousands of elephant tusks, floating on a cushion of air which Zephyr withdrew, allowing them to clatter to the ground. The media and police arrived almost at the same time.
Marina stepped forward to address the senior officer.
” My name is Marina and these are my team mates, Zephyr, Thermo and Rocky. We are Elementis.” She waited for a second for a reply but the man seemed to have lost the power of speech so she continued. “These are the men you have been trying to apprehend and this is their immoral bounty.” She said pointing to the Ivory. “We will leave you with a small portion of this to stand as evidence and the rest will be destroyed.” Green had told them that in countries where poverty was high and corruption rife, evidence had a way of finding its way back onto the black market. She nodded to the boys.
By now hundreds of people had gathered, being held back by an armed police cordon, but all could still see the spectacle that unfolded before them.
Rocky absorbed mass from the ground and grew to twenty metres and removed a small section of the Ivory and placed it beside the cowering poachers.
Thermo laid his hands on the rest of the pile and slowly began to freeze it. The Ivory began to crack as the temperature around it plummeted and it became brittle. Rocky formed a stone bowl around the pile, then turning one fist into a huge stone ball, proceeded to crush the White bone down until all that was left was a pile of course powder. Zephyr then created a small-localised tornado that lifted the powder to be distributed away in the bush.
The Chief of Police found his voice, ” I’m afraid you’re going to have to come with us. There are questions you need to answer; we have laws that need to be—-” before he continued Sara stopped him. “We do not recognise your laws. We came here to do a job and now we will leave”
“I’ll have to insist miss.” The chief said, motioning his armed officers forward. They moved one step forward when Rocky, still huge, stepped forward to stand behind Marina. Thermo stood by her side and closed his eyes in concentration and the guns pointing towards them suddenly became too hot to handle and were dropped to the floor.
Marina raised her eyebrows at the flustered Police Chief, “As I said, we’ll now be on our way. But before we leave I’d like to make a statement.” The members of the press, emboldened by the disarming of the police rushed forward with a dozen microphones and a hundred questions.
Marina raised her hands, “I said a statement, not a press conference” The noise subsided and she continued. “I know that you and the rest of the world want to know who or what we are and why we are here and it’s right that you should have answers to those questions, but not here and not now. We have a spokeswoman called Carol Jones in England. She will give a press conference very shortly and all will be explained.
Thank you for your time. Now if you could all please stand back”
The earth rumbled as Fortuna drew the four into the ground and they were gone.
To say this was the most eagerly anticipated press conference in history would be a monumental understatement. The venue had to be changed three times to accommodate the thousands of press from all over the globe who now massed in the Sheffield Arena awaiting the appearance of Carol Jones.
As she reached the stage, the febrile buzz became a low hum. Wearing a slate grey pencil skirt and jacket, with her platinum hair drawn up into a tight bun, she stood before the microphone and placed a single sheet of A4 paper on the podium before. That piece of paper would go down in history alongside the Magna Carta and the Declaration of Independence. She knew that after hearing the words written thereon, the world would be changed forever. She paused for a moment to survey the wide-eyed throng before her and to contemplate the fact that there were billions of people worldwide watching this broadcast live. She raised her hand to muffle a small cough to clear her throat then with a deep breath, she began.
“First let me thank you all for coming and for your patience since this press conference was announced. I would like to read a pre prepared statement then I will take questions.” She curled her fingers over the top of the podium to steady herself and rested her thumbs on the paper and continued. “At the end of last year, four teenagers and their parents were killed in Storrs Wood, only a few miles from where we are today. The essence and memories of the teenagers, their spirit, if you will, was saved and their bodies were recreated into the elements of earth, fire, wind and water, hence their collective name Elementis.
The mechanics of this transformation, although seemingly miraculous, conform to the laws of physics, albeit laws that we have yet to understand.
The orchestrator of this transformation is a higher power, that is as yet, beyond our comprehension and experience.
Although the explanations regarding their creation are complex, the reason for their creation is very simple; they are here to save the Planet Earth.
And they are here to save it from us.
There are a million planets in our galaxy alone that sustain life. On almost all of these life exists in a balanced, if fluctuating ecosystem that is self-regulating, self-repairing, self-sustaining.
Our planet was like this for millions of years, until we came along.
The gift or aberration of intelligence, depending on your point of view, of our species allowed us to break free of the natural checks and balances and begin to shape the world in our image, with dire consequences to the planet and every living thing upon it.
Elementis were created to ensure that this does not continue.
They are here to restore the natural order.
They are here to help us, all of us, by example, by demonstration and by educational to live harmoniously with the other living things that share our world.
It may well be the case that our species, as short sighted and greedy and self serving as it is, is not deserving or capable of this and that the lessons that Elementis try to teach us go unheeded but we need to understand and except one thing.
That is, that balance and order will be restored, with or without us. If we cannot exist within the system, the system will exist without us.
Elementis represent humanities last and only chance, it’s final hope of redemption.
We must follow them into a better world or become just another footnote in cosmic history as a species, like countless others, that flunked the evolutionary test.”
Carol took a step back and in a room full of thousands of people, there was, for a few moments, absolute silence.
Then pandemonium. Hands raised, questions shouted, even people fainting.
Carol raised her hands and slowly the cacophony subsided. She pointed an elegant finger at a journalist who seemed startled that he had been chosen to ask the first question at the most important press conference in history. He composed himself as a microphone was thrust before him.
“Are we to believe that God has sent these four angels to teach us the error of our ways?“ he said with a dry throat.
Carol smiled. “This is not about religion, this is about nature. There are natural forces and powers at work in the Universe that dwarf the power of any deity created by our imaginations.” The man tried to ask another question but the microphone had already moved along to a young lady that Carol was pointing to.
“How do you know there is life on other planets?”
Again Carol smiled, “Lets just say I’ve had insider information that the statistically irrefutable fact that life is abundant in the universe is actually a fact. Only our arrogance and ignorance encourage us to think otherwise.”
The next question, from an old man at the back of the hall was more measured.
“Tell me young lady, what will happen if we don’t pass the test? Do these children have the power to strike us down?”
Carol warming to her task lifted the microphone from its stand on the walked in front of the pedestal. ” We should not underestimate the power that they possess or that they represent but I am sure there will be no apocalyptic Armageddon. This would be a natural process, not a biblical one. Nature is very patient. A gradual extinction over millennia is but the blink of an eye on the cosmic scale, but no less effective.
But should we not be asking about the reward for success instead of the penalty for failure. We as a species, for all our faults, are innovative, resourceful and adaptable.
We can change and become a valuable part of the whole instead of its nemesis.
The rewards for success are obvious and so desirable; survival and salvation.”
Carol noticed a young woman a few rows back who was clearly elated but with tears running down her face. Carol motioned to have the microphone moved over to her.
“Why are you crying, my dear, ” she asked
The girl wiped away the tears with the sleeve of her shirt. “I’m just so happy that at least there’s hope for us. The world is such an awful, frightening place. Now hopefully we will see an end to the wars and the hunger. To all the misery.”
Carol knelt on one knee and spoke directly to the girl. ” You articulate all our hopes but the things you wish for will be a consequence of the collective action of humanity as a whole, not a result of direct action by Elementis. Elementis are not here to stop us killing each other or to provide food for people who live in areas that cannot sustain them.”
She stood to address the gathered throng.
“Let me be clear. This intervention is not to save humanity, but to save the planet from humanity. Only by becoming an integral and necessary part of the planet will humanity be allowed to flourish. The four young people who have become Elementis are
not here to fight crime, or stop your homes from flooding or save your cats from a tree.
They are here to show us, collectively as a species, how to live not only with ourselves but with everything.”
She stepped back, dropped her hands to her sides and bowed her head slightly to signify that she was done. As she raised her head, it began, a rapturous and sustained applause. She looked out over the crowd and it struck her; yesterday she was Carol Jones, schoolteacher, today she was the most famous person on Earth.
It was minutes before the noise subsided, then she raised the microphone once more and the room fell silent once more. Before she left the stage she had one more duty to perform.
“Over the coming months and years you will see a lot of Elementis, or as I’m sure you will come to know them, Marina, Zephyr, Thermo and Rocky. You will see them on your TV screens, on your phone and laptops, but not many of you will ever get to meet them, but for all of you here tonight, there’s nothing like being up close and personal.
I give you Elementis!” With that Carol stepped back with a theatrical flourish and suddenly through four small holes in the wooden stage floor, they appeared. The two girls in the middle, flanked by the boys.
First they just stood there in their uniforms, hand in hand, humbled and invigorated by the thunderous reception that eclipsed even Carol’s finale. They couldn’t help but look at each other, wide grins on their faces, and then Marina led them in a bow.
After a full minute the applause showed no signs of abating so Marina gave her friends a nod and they released hands.
Thermo rose into air and burst into flame. Zephyr became translucent and joined him in the air as Rocky increased his mass, growing up to the height where his friends hovered.
Finally, Marin’s formed a waterspout beneath her, which carried her up to the same height. Again they took a bow then waved to the crowd.
As they looked out and drank in the euphoria of the crowd, Marina, ever the pragmatist, realised that this might be the last time they were ever so popular, as the difficult road that they and humanity had to tread become more evident. She was, however, heartened by the thought that if this reception was anything to go by, then maybe, just maybe, this crazy idea, just might work.
