THE VAULT. FIND OF THE WEEK – Esquire Magazine. Sept 1966.
December 9, 2014 By Steve Eyre
On the face of it, having a fifty year old copy of Empire magazine as our find of the week, may seem odd.
But not when you see what’s inside!
Over a wonderful 14 pages is a series of articles about superheroes and their social, educational and emotional impact on American society.
As entertaining and informative as the articles are, that’s by no means the best of it.
The articles are graced with the art of the Godfather of comic book art, Jack “King” Kirby.
Kirby was artist, creator and co creator on many of the most icon is superheroes in history.
His vivid, colourful and purposely simplistic style was perfect for comic books and his collaboration with Stan Lee at Marvel Comics in the early 60s on Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the Hulk and hundreds of other characters, popularised a universe that is ruling the multimedia of today.
It was rare for him to illustrate thing outside of comics, how did he find the time, which makes this magazine fascinating.
All you multitude of people out there making a living from superheroes, tug your for-locks to Mr Kirby who I’m sure is looking down on us from that comic book world in the sky.
