Terminator: Genisys. Will this movie be a case of ‘I’ll be Back’ or ‘I’ve already Been’?
December 10, 2014 By Peter Ledwith
Come with me if you want to live….. Those words have become the second best meme from the fantastic set of movies since 1986, next to `Il be back`, (goes without saying really). I must admit it made me smile when I heard those words again in the latest movie trailer for Terminator Genisys. In what looks like a brilliant bit of casting, (she really does look like a young Linda Hamilton), Sarah Conor blurts out those lines to a young Kyle Reece. Terminator movies are big news. There have been the low points but to be fair, Terminator 3 had a lot to live up too after the awesome terminator 2. The TV series had some good episodes. Its one of those franchises that people want to work because the idea is so cool and Arnie really is so well suited for the role. So I was really excited to hear about the new trilogy to be produced. There is so much potential in this franchise. So many avenues to explore. Ive watched the trailer a dozen times and I know trailers don’t always reveal the full story but the more I see it, the more a sinking feeling grows inside me. I hope this doesn’t turn into a Terminator 2 clone.
What do I mean you ask…….well, it starts so promising. The huge time travel machine is revealed. The awesome 4 legged tank as first seen in the deleted storyboards of T2….The scar faced John Connor and the young Kyle Reece revealed…..the young CG Arni sent back in time, followed by Kyle, all fantastic. But then it starts to be a little familiar. A van driven through a front window to rescue someone….just like T2, a police officer T1000….just like T2 (with the same hair cut no less). He could have disguised himself as ANY human alive…..but no. T1000 shot in the eye which reforms….just like T2. The T1000 chasing the same van…just like T2. The Arnie terminator sent to protect the Connor family…just like T2. If in a 2 minute trailer we see so many T2isms, well it just doesn’t bode well. I hope when the film is released next year, we are blown away by this movie. They say imitation is a form of flattery and they could do worse than learning from the pinnacle of the franchise. I guess we shall see. I still have high hopes. I mean its Arnie again….he came back!
