THE VAULT – FIND OF THE WEEK! VIZ Issue 1
November 18, 2014 By Steve Eyre
We have just acquired what we believe to be the finest copy of the first issue of Viz magazine in existence. It is a flawless copy and looks as new as when it came out in 1979.
That’s when Chris Donald created the magazine in his bedroom in Newcastle. The first few issues were simply photocopies put together by Chris for his friends but with its irreverent, politically incorrect humour and a cast of characters including Roger Mellie, Buster Gonad, Biffa Bacon, the Fat Slags and my favourite Big Vern, it fast became a cult favourite. Incredibly it grew, within a few years, to be the biggest selling magazine in the UK, with sales of over a million copies. It still has a huge following today which is why the price of the rare back issues are rocketing.
Only 150 copies of Issue One were produced. Few of these survived and none in as good a condition as this copy.
Our comic grading experts who specialise in grading vintage American comics have graded it as near mint + or 9.6 out of 10.
This issue is a milestone in British publishing history and to find one in this condition is rare indeed.
If you are interested in buying this beauty, it has just gone onto our shop.
