Convention Report & Cosplay Gallery: MCM Memorabilia and Comicon at NEC Birmingham 2014
November 27, 2014 By Steve Eyre
I’m not sure why it was billed and publicised as two separate events as both things where mingled together in one huge hall and I didn’t see many comic book dealers there.
Like all things, these type of shows evolve. Now they are less about comic book fans searching for the illusive back issue( they do all that on line) and more about a fun day out. Whether your into film, gaming, anime, Cosplay, books, comics, autographs or art, there’s something here for you. There was a dearth of celebrities on show but for these type of shows, they are no longer essential. The Cosplayers are much more fun and engaging and don’t charge you for taking their photos.
At the last few UK conventions I’ve attended I detected a bit of apathy, from the organisers, the dealers and most worryingly from the paying punters.
The feeling I’m getting is people are growing tired of the same thing at every show. The same dealers, the same celebs. If these shows are to survive and prosper they need, like any organism, to evolve.
This is what the US conventions have realised. They are fan friendly, they are interactive, they are educational and family orientated.
Fans will only continue to shell out their hard earned to attend a glorified car boot sale so many times. As much as I enjoyed the show, I just know it could have been so much better.
As President of World of Superheroes and a frustrated, begrudging fan of conventions, many people have asked me why I don’t put my money where my mouth is and host one.
Now there’s a thought!
