The Vault – Joe Shuster Memorial 1915-1992
September 15, 2014 By Steve Eyre
Of all the thousands of items of memorabilia in the Vault archive, I obviously have many personal favourites for many different reasons. But if I had to choose one piece to save, forsaking all the others, It would be this.
In 1992, shortly after the death of Joe Shuster, co-creator of Superman, with Jerry Siegel, I attended the UKCAC (United Kingdom Comic Art Convention) in London.
In the programme was a beautiful poignant page by Jon Bogdanove, surely one of the greatest of all Superman artists. It showed the Man of Steel, his head turned to hide a tear and a headstone on which is an epitath to Joe Shuster. I resolved to cut out the page and frame it but fate intervened to make it unnecessary.
That Saturday evening there was a charity auction and the original page was up for grabs. Incredibly – after a mere three bids it was mine and it has been with me ever since.
