Convention Report: London Film & Comic Con 2014
July 17, 2014 By Holly Clarkson
This Comic Con will live long in my memory for one reason. It’s the last one in the UK that Stan “The Man’ Lee will attend…and I’ve never seen it so packed.
There were so many positives – the guests, the artists and writers, the merchants, the venue (the magnificent Earls Court) the staff – both paid and volunteers and thankfully for all the thousands of people queuing outside, the weather.
The biggest positives, as always were the fans. In their fabulous costumes and outfits, they had to wait, were crushed, couldn’t get a drink, and crossed their legs waiting for the bathroom. Despite this they were patient, tolerant and good humored.
It must have been a record breaking attendance for a European convention of this type, partly because it was the last time in the UK that fans could meet the legendary Stan Lee, gracing our shores for the final time, but mostly because of the seemingly inexorable rise of superhero and sci-fi films.
You’ll say I’m getting churlish in my old age, but I do think that next year the organisers need to strike a balance between consumer demand and venue capacity to ensure the most enjoyable experience possible.
Overall it was an enjoyable, if exhausting, weekend. Just being in the midst of all those enthusiastic fans, and I count myself among them, who show such dedication and passion to this thing of ours is both a humbling and uplifting experience.
Finally a personal thanks to Stan who I’ve met many times over the years. From myself and all the millions of people who have found enjoyment, employment, fame and fortune from your efforts, creativity, energy and your infectious, boundless enthusiasm, we salute you.
We are all richer in so many ways because of you.
